faces_of_africaOne of Smith Mountain Lake’s more famous attractions is Booker T. Washington National Monument. As many readers know this monument is a memorial to Booker T. Washington, born in 1856 into slavery on this 207 acre tobacco farm. Washington later became an important, if controversial leader of his people. Visitors to his monument are invited to step back in time and experience what life was like for people of Washington’s time.

On Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m., Booker T. Washington National Monument will offer a fun family event for visitors of all ages that portrays life on a mid-19thcentury small slave holding tobacco plantation during the late summer “harvest time.” Enjoy the living history and costumed demonstrations. Admission is free.
Open seven days a week, year-round, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1 and found at 12130 Booker T. Washington Highway
