Grand Winter Gala

Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy and Lake Christian Ministries have put together a Grand Winter Gala Charity Art Show and Auction for March 6th, 2010. This creative benefit for the two local ministries promises to be a ton of fun, with a gourmet chef dinner, live entertainment and a very unique auction.

Grand Home Furnishings will be furnishing 12 small bare wood chairs for 12 different artists to paint in their own unique style. The artistically painted chairs will then be auctioned off on March 6, 2010 at The Grand Winter Gala and all profits will be donated to the above listed charities.

The Grand Winter Gala will be held at the Waters Edge Ball Room on March 6th from 7pm. to 11pm. You can purchase tickets in person from Grand Home Furnishings Westlake, Lynchburg, Valley View and Tanglewood, or fill out an online order form to receive your tickets in the mail. Individuals are $60 and couples are $100.

Finz – By Land or Lake

Everyone at Smith Mountain Lake appreciates a new restaurant and especially if it is unique and yet reasonably priced. It seems that Finz, the newest eatery on the water will provide just that.

Situated on the water at Crystal Shores Marina this is a most charming spot to eat dinner or go listen to music on Friday and Saturday nights. People who care about being environmentally friendly will love the decor (recycled from barns, construction sites, etc.). Although they have a bar, the atmosphere is generally family friendly and you can eat in or take out and it’s not hard to get filled up for under $15.

The food is great (grilled chicken, seafood and vegetables to island sandwiches and filet mignon), the service is friendly, and they are accessible from the lake as mentioned above. Greek Festival in Roanoke

Are there any Greek cuisine lovers at Smith Mountain Lake besides me? If so, don’t miss out on the Greek Festival in Roanoke on September 18th, 19th and 20th from 11am. to 10pm Fri./Sat. and 12 to 7pm. Sun. I love that a portion of the proceeds for this fun event will go to benefit The Rescue Mission and Center in the Square.

If you have never tried Greek food, then you may be in for a treat. The Greeks don’t go in for drab foods, they love rich flavors and tastes. The culture as a whole is full of loving, intense, laughing, hard working folks. I can’t say I have experienced another culture that I liked better. When I was a kid, we had good friends who were very Greek and my sister and I adored visiting them. They played hard, loved the Lord and were rich in compassion, honesty and ever enjoyed good food. I was exposed to some great new ideas and taste experiences during those visits.

Besides the great food there will be live music, traditional costumes and dancing, pottery, jewelry, painting, contests, and children’s events. A fantastic time to be had by all!

Mariner’s Landing Website

If you have not visited Mariner’s Landing at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, you are missing a treat. It is a fantastic place to go for a special occasion. You can eat top of the line cuisine at their famous restaurant with stunning views or stay the weekend at the gorgeous lake resort, or play golf with the best. There are so many choices of wonderful things to enjoy that it would take too much space to list them all here.

But speaking of missing a treat, somehow I had missed seeing the Mariner’s Landing website. If I had run onto it just surfing the web, or searching out Smith Mountain Lake vacation spots, I would think it one of the most lovely and impressive areas in the Eastern United States.

If you have not visited the Mariner’s Landing website, take a look. I think you will like what you see. It does Smith Mountain Lake proud.

New Dining Experiences at the Lake

Most of us at Smith Mountain Lake are always looking to enjoy a new dining experience. It is nice to know the best places to take friends or business associates when they are in town, or just which restaurant Mom would love to visit on her birthday.

Now you can check out 2 of the newest eateries in our area, and even participate in their Grand Openings if you would like.

If you enjoy serious food and tasting wine, come to the Grand Opening of Jonathan’s restaurant on Thursday, May 28th. The festivities start at 2:30pm with the Ribbon Cutting at 3pm. You’ll enjoy light hors d’oeurves and as a special treat there will be a wine tasting. Please feel free to stay for an early dinner. If you want more than coffee and tea for breakfast and lunch, Solid Ground Coffee and Tea has it. In Roanoke the Mill Mountain Coffee Houses reign supreme, but at Smith Mountain Lake the Smith Mountain Coffee & Cafe is one of the best little hang outs around. Whether you want to go out for a chat with a friend, or are just stopping by for a sandwich and your favorite beverage, it’s a nice place to visit.

Like most cafe type establishments Smith Mountain Coffee & Cafe has a charming atmosphere that is conducive to study, quiet conversation or just a snack stop. It is also situated in a convenient location at the Westlake Towne Center on Booker T. Washington Hwy.

They offer a full range of hot and cold espresso-based drinks, as well as fresh, whole-bean coffees from around the world. Menu includes breakfast and lunch, sandwiches, pastries, soups, and salads. It doesn’t hurt that you can come out full and spend under $10 at this nice little cafe either.
They are open Monday through Saturday at 7:00 a.m.

The Tasting Room Bistro

Have you visited one of Smith Mountain Lake’s newest dining experiences yet? Drema and Fred Sylvester are the proprietors of the restaurant, ‘The Tasting Room Bistro’. Their desire is to make it an ‘experience’ rather than just a dinner and fine wine. Their chef, Jeff Bland is a professional culinary instructor and has taught all over Virginia, from private schools to college level and has entered and won in culinary competitions. Sounds like they might just have something you would enjoy for an evening out.

Chef DeWayne Itson and Harrison’s Restaurant

I caught a glimpse of an article on a chef at one of Smith Mountain Lake’s Restaurants the other day while in a waiting room. I jotted his name down and went on line to find out more about him. It seems that Harrison’s Restaurant employs this chef of some particular renown: DeWayne Itson. Formerly a chef for the acclaimed Chateau Morrisette, now at our own Smith Mountain Lake.

Harrison’s Restaurant at Sunset Cay features exceptional cuisine in a casual, “Florida Keys” atmosphere. Open for business since mid-May, the newly renovated restaurant includes a panoramic view of Smith Mountain Lake – which can seat 324, including a fun outdoor deck area – serves a traditional, home-style breakfast (the best on the Lake!). Our lunch menu showcases some unique items, including a variety of sandwiches and salads. The dinner menu has also been expanded to include steaks, seafood and specialty entrees. It’s truly upscale dining in a casual atmosphere!
Make plans to come by car or boat as our parking includes dedicated boat slips with dock attendants (a service we have always offered free of charge).
