Exciting stuff is going on around Smith Mountain Lake these days. School starting, Monster making contests, Movies being produced……..

Who in our neck of the woods would dream of becoming famous for their design and invention of a monster to go in a movie produced at Smith Mountain Lake? Few people that is for sure, but someone will do just that in the next month or so. The Lake Effects movie needs a monster…….Submission deadline is now September 11th, 2010. And if you are a professional actor or actress you may want to try out for the Lake Effects Movie being produced here at Smith Mountain Lake.

Local casting will take place on: September 8th in Charlottesville at the Erica Arvold Casting Office,

Older Folks and Children

It is easy for the needs of folks less fortunate in the Smith Mountain Lake neighborhood to go unnoticed. Thankfully there are neighbors and friends who try to make sure things are happening to bring enjoyment to many of those who are having a rough time. The first item of note is a fundraiser to help the children around the lake with various needs. The next few mentions regard older people and things relevant to their lives. Get involved and have fun doing it.

SML Good Neighbors invites you to the 2nd annual Mini- Golf Tournment at Hot Shots on September 11, 2010 (Raindate Sept. 18). Pre-Registraion $15.00. Many door prizes and free hot dogs and soda. Join us for a fun event fundraiser helping children in our community.

Goodwill Event

It’s not often that a main event of the season is hosted by Goodwill near Smith Mountain Lake. Even more unusual is that the event is a high energy fashion show called “Second Runway”.

You have to come out for this one. It may be a one of a kind. You can have a good time with plenty of good food and drinks and lots of folks to socialize with. There will also be a silent auction, boutique shopping and as mentioned above, a fashion show unlike any other.

Wine Festival Ticket Discount

The 2010 Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival is in high gear. They are now selling advance discount tickets. That means if you buy your tickets now rather than the day of the festival, you will save money.

Taster tickets are now $18 (will be $22) and designated driver tickets are $12 (will be $16). These advance tickets are good for either day of the festival. The hope is that this will , help make the event affordable for everyone.

Advance discount tickets are available until September 24th at 5pm. (festival is the 25th and 26th of Sept.).
These advance tickets will be available at the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Center Front Desk and at and online at: SML Wine Festival Tickets. Use paypal if you shop online.

Take the Whole Family Out to the Plaza For a Night of Fun

There are a lot of great activities for the kids that go on around Smith Mountain Lake, and a pretty good variety for the adults as well. But when you can take the whole family together and there is something fun for everyone, that is unique.

Even better still if the event is FREE like the latest Halesford Baptist Church entertainment. Take the entire family out for a wonderful evening at Bridgewater Plaza every Tuesday from now till August 17th at 7:00 p.m.

The kids will enjoy the free face painting, small prizes and fun food. Here is an overview of the upcoming fun: On July 27th you can watch Mark Fuller perform tricks and illusions. On August 3rd Ziggy the Clown will come to entertain. On August 10th you can enjoy the talented Radford Baptist Praise Band, Choir and Dance Team. And finally on August 17th come see Christian Comedian, Barry McGee.

Grand Openings at SML

Two interesting and tasty sounding eateries are having their Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings at Smith Mountain Lake this month. Now when a good restaurant has a Grand Opening, you don’t want to miss out on it. There are delicious food samplings and lots of socializing wherever great cuisine is found.

In the case of our 2 newest restaurant offerings, I can only say I am glad they are not on the same day, so we can experience them both as we welcome them at their community ribbon cuttings.

EDO Grill and Sushi Bar is having their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Wednesday, July 21 from 11:30am – 1:00pm with the Ribbon Cutting at 12:15pm. Samplings of their delicious food will be served. EDO Grill is located in Downtown Moneta in the new building to the right of the Gazebo, Route 122.

Anchors Family Restaurant is having their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Wednesday, July 28 from 11:30am – 1:00pm with the Ribbon Cutting at 12:15pm. They are located at the intersection of VA 608 & VA 626 in Huddleston in the old White House Restaurant location.

The 4th of July at the Lake

It is hard to believe it is time for 4th of July celebrations at Smith Mountain Lake again. But no matter how old we are we never lose our enjoyment of big sparkling lights and colorful explosions in the night. Watching the fireworks at the lake just adds another amazing dimension to the fun because they are reflected in the lake waters. Don’t miss out on the 4th of July events this year.

Actually this years fireworks are going to be on the 3rd of July with the 4th of July being the fallback for a raindate. The Saunders Volunteer Fire Company will present its annual Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fundraiser hosted at the Parkway Marina in Huddleston. Besides their famous firework display there will be live music, a car and boat show and much, much more. Beginning at 3 p.m., you can enjoy amusement rides, crafts, lots of yummy food and music by The Worx – before the grand finale.

Mariners Landing’s July 4th Celebration will have a concert and Fireworks Finale - Symphony at the Lake. The concert will feature the Roanoke Symphony String Virtuosi and more! Mariners Landing is your destination for great special events, so please visit Mariner’s Landing on the web for details.

Near Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, there are plans for a marvelous event underway. The Horse & Hound Wine Festival is to be held on July 10th on the grounds of Johnson’s Orchards located in scenic Bedford, Va .

Some of the things going on at Smith Mountain Lake may have been passed over the first time you read them, so we are re-posting a couple of things that really need to be remembered, acted on or passed around to your neighbors. Take a look…

Sign up for your 2011 Smith Mountain Lake License Plate – The SML Chamber is collecting applications for the new 2011 SML license plate and have less than half of what is needed. They must receive 350 prepaid applications by July 1 to qualify before other requirements can be implemented and the state begins production and distribution of the Smith Mountain Lake license plates. To receive a DMV/SML Chamber application, CLICK HERE. Complete the DMV/SML Chamber application and return it with a check (no cash, please) made out to “SMLRCC” in the amount of $10. Bring by or mail your application and check to the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, 16430 Booker T. Washington Highway, Moneta, VA 24121 to be added to the list of 350. If they do not collect 350 prepaid applications by the deadline, you will receive a refund.

Juneteenth at Booker T. Monument

Near Smith Mountain Lake is a famous monument to an incredible person, Booker T. Washington. If you don’t know Mr. Washington’s story, visit the Booker T. Website for an interesting read.

In the meantime, come join us as the Booker T. Washington National Monument celebrates Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. There will be musical entertainment, a petting zoo, food for sale, and more.

It’s a great opportunity to check out all that you may have been missing at the Monument such as the visitors center with audio and video presentations, historic trails to walk, old time gardens, farm area with sheep, pigs, horses and much more.
