Update on Movie “Lake Effects”

Many of us at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia are eagerly keeping tabs on progress of a movie company called Life Out Loud Films. All the excitement is due to the fact that they are planning to begin production of a movie here at the lake this fall. Here is the most current update straight from the lady who had the original vision for the movie, Sara Elizabeth Timmins.

“Lake Effects” Updates:
We believe we will be in position to green light financially in early 2010.

We are in contact with over a dozen interested Hollywood film distributors and television networks.

We are currently focusing our efforts on filling our final investor slots.

This community’s support has captured the attention of the LA film industry.

We are happy to report that — barring any unforeseen setbacks — we are on track to shoot “Lake Effects” in October of 2010. We anticipate being in position to officially green light in early 2010 – the significance of which is that we can move on to the creative process, including casting. Academy Awards Party and Benefit

Mariners Landing at Smith Mountain Lake is the place to be on March 7th, 2010. This is one of the best kinds of parties, the kind where you benefit a good cause and enjoy yourself immensely all at the same time.

If you recall a while back we wrote about Life Out Loud Films and the movie they plan to shoot at the lake this year called “Lake Effects”. You can be part of that exciting venture by joining us for the Academy Awards Party to benefit Life Out Loud Films.

Carriage Hill Retirement Assisted Living – Open House

Many of the elderly in our Smith Mountain Lake community have special needs and in order to care for them adequately in some cases, special facilities are needed.

That is why the Carriage Hill Retirement Assisted Living recently had their facility renovated and their Memory Unit Expanded to offer even greater benefits to those who need their services.

Come and see what is going on at Carriage Hill as they celebrate their expansions and improvements with an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on Friday, Jan. 22nd from 1:30 to 3:30pm. “Lake Effects” to be Filmed

We recently mentioned a movie being filmed and produced here at Smith Mountain Lake. We have also been in contact with the lady who is behind the film, Sarah Timmins. There are so many positive things about the production company, (Live) Life Out Loud, as well as the movie being made (Lake Effects), that we plan to keep our readers in the know about what is happening. Here are a few excerpts from Sarah’s communication with us:

The short update is that things have really started to move. We are still in the fundraising phase but the script and many of the creative details and resources have been secured and are ready to go. We just returned from LA in November and are communicating with over a dozen film distributors and some TV networks who are extremely interested in the project and helping take it direct to family or woman’s TV. It appears family film is in demand and not enough product is available.

We are extremely hopeful that this momentum will continue and we can reach the remaining funding early in 2010 and move on to the fun creative part. I feel so honored to work with such an amazing community and look forward to supporting current city and lake efforts to promote economic development and tourism.

Thank you again for mentioning the film! We are really committed to working with the community and in order to do that and meet our fund-raising goals, awareness is so important. We so appreciate everyone who supports us and spreads the word about “Lake Effects”!

Changes at the SML Visitor Center

There have been some great improvements made at the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Center. Near the beginning of this month the renovations began on the Center and have progressed until the present. The changes are ones worth seeing.

It’s amazing how a fresh coat of paint, some wall space highlighting and other improvements can go a long way towards a new and fabulous looking place. In addition to maximizing the wall space, there is now a “Visitor Center Video Wall” incorporating a High Definition Flat Screen LCD TV and DVD player. This “Video Wall” will showcase local businesses and SML Chamber members with video billboards and videos highlighting the Smith Mountain Lake area and events. Come by the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Center and check out their new look.

Movie To Be Shot at SML

It seems to have all started when a daughter of some Smith Mountain Lake residents came home to visit and fell in love with the lake all over again. This particular woman also happens to work for a production studio which decided to make a movie depicting the peace she found at the lake.

The production studio is Life Out Loud. The name of the movie is “Lake Effects” and it’s storyline is simple but interesting. Two sisters lose their father and re-evaluate the choices of their varied lives (one has gone to the big city, the other stayed at the lake).

In addition to the “Lake Effects” feature, Life Out Loud Films LLC also plans to expand the development of a separate documentary centered on Smith Mountain Lake and Southwest Virginia.

Smith Mountain Lake TV

Smith Mountain Lake Television? Yes, but it may not be exactly what you think. SML TV, powered by a company called Sellavision Media, now has it’s first 2 host display screens in place for public viewing so you can see for yourself what it’s all about.

The first screen is located at Solid Ground Coffee and Tea. It was up and running on November 21st. The second screen, hosted at VitaZen’s new location was online December 1st.

Unbridled Change Farm Tour

Perhaps you have heard of Smith Mountain Lake’s Unbridled Change Therapy Program. If so you may also have wondered exactly what sort of operation it is and what they are about. According to their website they provide mental health therapy and educational learning utilizing horses.

If you like horses and would like to learn more about this unique therapy program, you can join with others for a free farm tour of Equine Assisted Activities & Therapies (EAAT). The tour will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21st from 2:00 – 3:30 pm.

Be A Part of Franklin Co. Growth

One of the lovely counties bordering Smith Mountain Lake is Franklin Co. Virginia. As with most counties, Franklin Co. undergoes periodic changes and improvements. The community is invited to be part of this particular time of planning and it is a great opportunity for locals to express their desires and thoughts for the area.

The issue at hand will be the development of Franklin County Parks and Recreation facilities, and growth planning for the next 15 years or so. This is our chance to speak up and make a difference. The meeting will take place at the Westlake Library Community Meeting Room on Oct. 28th from 5-7pm. And again on Oct. 29th at the Ferrum College Banquet Room/Franklin Hall from 5-7pm.

Chili Festival Time Again

Amazingly it is already time for the 7th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Chili Festival, something many of us look forward to all year. This year for some reason it seems like it was just yesterday we enjoyed the 6th Annual Festival. But that’s okay since it is such an enjoyable occasion.

This year the Chili Festival is also a Craft Festival, which should add fun and variety to the experiences of the day. When is the big day? November the 7th on the lakeside at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, near the Hales Ford Bridge. It will begin at 11am. and go until 4pm. with the chili tasting starting at Noon. Tickets are $5 for adults, kids under 6 are free and you can buy the tickets at the gate or at the SML Visitors Center.

Enjoy a full-day event featuring music, crafts and a spectacular competitive chili cook-off. Trophies will be awarded for “Best Chili,” “People’s Choice,” and “Showmanship.” It’ll be a hot time at Smith Mountain Lake.
