Community Events and NewsThe Smith Mountain Lake community is alive and active and ever offering special deals,  opportunities for growth and fun things to participate in. Following are just some of the upcoming activities and offers for our area that you won’t want to miss.

“Leading in Turbulent Times” seminar:

Virginia Western Community College has partnered with Development Dimensions International to offer a special seminar, “Leading in Turbulent Times.”  Wednesday, March 18 from 8:30 a.m. Noon  in Roanoke.

Tuesday, March 10 2006 7:30 p.m. Gráda Celtic from Ireland Irish music with “enough steam in its heels to leave most of its peers at the starting blocks.” (The Irish Times) Gráda combines both globe trotted experience and musical accomplishments. Multicultural backgrounds help bring a fresh approach to playing a presenting a unique slant on traditional music. Musically, Gráda produces a fresh approach to playing bringing together elements of jazz improvisations and the raw energy of traditional Irish music.

Have treasures you’d like to learn more about? Bring them(or a picture if too large to carry) to the Antiques/Collectibles I.D. Clinic on March 28, 2009 from 10am to 2 pm at Radford Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Appraisers and antique dealers will be there to help you learn more about your treasures. Cost is $5 per item. Toastmasters meet at Westlake Library the first Thursday of each month: People who get ahead in life are those who communicate effectively. Develop your presentation skills through Toastmasters.  Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. at the Franklin County Library at Westlake. The 2009 Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival has kicked off its special “early bird pricing.”  Taster tickets are $15 and designated driver admission is $10.  Tickets are good either day, helping to make the event affordable for everyone.  These special discount prices remain is in effect until June 1.

“Early bird” tickets are available at the Smith Mountain Lake Visitor Center Front Desk and on the web site. The Chamber is using PayPal for its internet sales transactions. Normal advance discount ticket pricing will be $18 for taster tickets and $12 for designated driver tickets beginning June 1 through September 23 at 5 p.m. Tickets sold at the gate are set at $22 for taster and $15 for designated driver admission. The event will be held at LakeWatch Plantation.
