Butter Slide, Potato Peeler, Batwing, Indy Glide, Diesel, Elephant, Mexican Roll – all those strange phrases may sound like a list of childhood nicknames, but these are all tricks from wakeboarding, the hottest sport on the water at SML. If you’re not familiar with wakeboarding, try to picture a cross between skateboarding and aerial gymnastics, all while being towed behind a motor boat at twenty miles an hour – in other words, not a sport for the faint of heart. If you’re interested in seeing some of the best boarders in the area, or maybe want to show off some tricks of your own, then mark July 29th on your calendar. That’s the date of the Smith Mountain Lake Wakefest, sponsored by Wake N Skate Boardshop. The 2006 Wakefest will be held at Bernard’s Landing with registration beginning at 8:00 AM. The divisions for competition include Grom, Womens, Over 40, Intermediate, Wakeskate, Invert, and Outlaw. If you’re interested in participating and need more information, contact the Wake N Skate shop at 540-721-1941 or at sales@wakenskate.com. See you on the water!
