Although Big Island, VA. is a little bit of a drive from Smith Mountain Lake, you may want to consider making a visit there this weekend, especially if you enjoy Scottish/Irish culture and music. This event is so popular that over 1500 people attended it in 2007.
On Saturday, April 26th the 10th Annual Celtic Festival is being sponsored by Featherfield Farm of Bedford, Virginia. There will be dancing and celebration of the Scottish, Irish and Welsh traditions, lots of good food, great music (including a local band), and so much more.
Celtic music covers the traditional music of the Celtic countries - Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany (in France), Galicia (in Spain) and areas which have come under their influence, such as the US and the maritime provinces of Canada, as well as some newer music based on the tradition from these countries.
In Canada and the US, the traditional tunes and instrumentation evolved into Bluegrass, Country, and Rock genres. Modern Celtic music is a blend of many different styles, from the raw, Scottish-tinged “lovin’ an’ fightin’ songs” to the lyrical, easy-going plaintive Irish flavor, with hints of jazz, rock, fusion, and funk. People of all nationalities find something to enjoy in the mix.Festival attendees won’t want to miss Sedalia’s second annual Knobby Knees Contest, open to all men without pants (kilt required!), Women’s Athletic Activities, Genealogy Instruction, Sheep Dog Demos, Medieval Reenactments, Celtic Food, Beer and Wine, Vendors & Clans and many Children’s activities. The 10th Annual Celtic Festival promises more fun than you can have with your pants on, so be sure to wear a kilt! For more information visit the Sedalia Center Website.
This outdoor festival will be from 10 am to 8 pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-17. No charge for children under 6. No coolers or pets allowed. The Sedalia Center, 1108 Sedalia School Road, Big Island 434-299-5080.
