It’s funny how you can live someplace like Smith Mountain Lake and miss experiencing some of it’s most scenic and popular offerings. I can’t think how many times I have heard someone say how they had never visited a place close to them that people came from all over the United States to see. Well, don’t let that happen to you.

The Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is centered around three of the most famous mountain peaks in Virginia. The area has a lovely lodge on a small lake, a great restaurant and picnic area as well as a visitor center, campground, and some excellent hiking trails. The trails offer a fantastic view of the three closely spaced mountains and a small valley with a lake. You can also watch living demonstrations and tours of Johnson Farm, which was built in the1850s.

If you have never been to the Peaks of Otter, Saturday June 28th is the perfect time. It’s a wonderful area to plan a whole day around. Check out some of the action below.

Jun 28 - Starry Starry Night at Peaks of Otter - 8:00pm- Join National Park Volunteers Martin di Leggi and Alan Pipkin as they explore the night skies and constellations in the Flat Top Room of the Peaks of Otter Lodge.
