From a recent Yahoo! Finance press release “Waterfront Property on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia Continues to be a Solid Investment“:
While other real estate hot spots are beginning to cool down, waterfront property values on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia continue to be a solid investment. “We get calls regularly from oceanfront property owners on the eastern seaboard wanting to buy on this lake,” said Paul Moore, owner of Smith Mountain Homes. “Property values have appreciated approximately 50% in the last two years. There are currently over 400 waterfront lots and over 200 homes listed, and a large percentage of waterfront land remains undeveloped.”
Moore maintains this is the time to buy Smith Mountain Lake real estate, “It is always a buyer’s market during the slower months. Once things pick up with more buyers there is more competition for every property.”
Located only 250 miles from Washington, DC, and less than 400 miles from Pittsburgh, Smith Mountain Lake is fast becoming a popular retirement and investment spot for those living farther north. “About one out of every four people who call me live in Maryland, New York, or other New England states,” said Moore. “They are amazed at how much they can get for their money and the lower property taxes just add to the attraction. Once they come down and see the beauty of Smith Mountain Lake, they are sold.”
